Emergency Medical Technician Programs
EMT-Basic
With a total of 130 hours of intensive class time, this comprehensive Emergency Medical Technician-Basic course meets the Massachusetts requirement of instruction and practice necessary for the student to sit for the two-part Massachusetts EMT-Basic examination. Successful completion of this course and, by extension, the Massachusetts written and practical examination, ensures EMT-Basic certification through the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Office of Emergency Medical Services.
Areas of instruction covered through lectures and hands-on practice include: legal issues; general pharmacology; respiratory and cardiovascular emergencies; OB/GYN emergencies; musculoskeletal, head, and spine trauma; soft tissue injuries; hazardous materials; ambulance operations; emergency medical techniques for children; and scene safety.
Evaluation is based on class participation and performance on class exams, quizzes, and practical exercises.

Prerequisites:
Copies of immunization records
American Heart Association BLS Healthcare Provider CPR card or the American Red Cross Level C Provider CPR card.
18 years of age, as evidenced by a copy of the prospective students’ certified birth certificate or valid drivers license
Be able to read, understand & communicate in English
Be free from addiction to alcohol or any drug
Be able to lift and carry 125 pounds
Be free from any physical or mental defect or disease which might impair his/her ability to provide emergency care within the scope of the EMT-Basic's training and responsibilities, or which might jeopardize the health of another member of the class

Note: this course does not certify students as an EMT-Basic at the completion of the course. Successful completion of the course will allow the student to be considered eligible to take the Massachusetts EMT-Basic written and practical exam.
EMT-Intermediate
A course for the already certified EMT-Basic, this program deals with body fluids and electrolytes, advanced airway management and cardiac defibrillation. Mechanisms of fluid and electrolyte balance, shock, IV Therapy, and its possible complications, the techniques of esophageal and endotracheal intubation, cardiac pathophysiology, dysrhythmia recognition and automatic defibrillation are stressed. This course is designed for EMTs who are members of certified ALS volunteer, municipal, or commercial units operating under the medical direction of a physician.
Evaluation is based on class participation and performance on class exams, quizzes, and practical exercises.

Programs for the Professional Rescuer
Professional Rescuer CPR
The Professional RescuersCourse teaches the skills of CPR for victims of all ages (including ventilation with a barrier device, a bag-mask device, and oxygen), use of an automatic external defibrillator (AED) on adults and children, and relief of foreign body airway obstruction (FBAO) in responsive and unresponsive victims. The course is designed for healthcare providers who care for patients in a wide variety of settings, both in and out of hospital.
Course length: 3 to 6 hours

Automated External Defibrillation (AED)
This course teaches health care professionals how to operate AEDs. It is also designed to facilitate the efficient testing and retesting in the use of an AED.

First Responders Course
The only First Responder training program endorsed by a national organization, it is designed to meet the needs of law enforcement personnel, fire fighters, rescue squad personnel, athletic trainers, and other professional "rescuers." This program will help students take the next step toward becoming outstanding First Responders.

Pediatric First Aid (PedFACTS)
Caregivers need to know what to do when a child is injured or becomes suddenly and severely ill. Most injuries that require first aid are not life-threatening. Usually, first aid involves simple, common sense procedures. However, first aid can sometimes mean the difference between life and death. All caregivers and teachers should have pediatric first aid training. The PedFacts course is designed to give caregivers the education and confidence that they need to effectively care for children. Emergency Medical Technician-Basic Refresher Course
The Emergency Medical Technician – Basic Refresher Course is designed to review the core content of the initial EMT training program. For each level of provider, there are specific minimum requirements for refresher training. This refresher program is designed to review required topics such as preparatory, airway, patient assessment, behavior, medical / trauma, OB, infant & children, electives and much more. This program helps the participant keep their skills active as well as relearning many skills they may have forgotten.

Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate Refresher Course
The Emergency Medical Technician – Intermediate Refresher Course is designed to review the core content of the initial EMT-I training program. This refresher program is designed to review required topics such as airway, patient assessment, intravenous therapy, electives, and much more. This program helps the participant keep their skills active as well as relearning many skills they may have forgotten.

Continuing Education (Paramedic, Intermediate, Basic Level)
All levels of EMTs are initially certified upon successful completion of the Massachusetts exam process. After a variable initial certification period, each level of EMT must renew their certification every two years. One component needed for recertification is mandatory attendance to training scope applicable continuing education sessions. Recertification requirements for each level are described below:
EMT Basic DOT level: EMT Refresher course (minimum 24 hours); 28 additional hours of approved EMT basic level recertification credit classes, and current BLS-CPR credential in order to staff an ambulance.
EMT-Intermediate DOT level: EMT-Intermediate Refresher course (minimum 36 hours); 28 additional hours of approved EMT-Intermediate level recertification credit classes, and current BLS-CPR credential in order to staff an ambulance.
EMT-Paramedic DOT level: EMT-Paramedic Refresher course (minimum 48 hours); 25 additional hours of approved EMT-Paramedic level recertification credit classes; Biennial recertification in ACLS and current BLS-CPR credential in order to staff an ambulance.

Emergency Vehicles Operations Course (EVOC)
The Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) is designed to provide EMS operators with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely operate an Emergency Vehicle in emergency and non-emergency mode. Topics covered include legal aspects of Emergency Vehicle operations, navigating and route mapping, driver roles and responsibilities, basic driving skills, and proper driving procedures. The course is 8 hours in duration. The first part of the course is in the classroom. The second part of the course includes hands on Emergency Vehicle driving on a course. Participants will receive 8 hours of Massachusetts OEMS continuing education credits upon successful completion of the course. This course has been produced by VFIS.

Programs for the Lay Person
First Responders Course
The only First Responder training program endorsed by a national organization, it is designed to meet the needs of the layperson. This program will help students take the next step toward becoming outstanding First Responders.

First Aid, CPR, and Automated External Defibrillation (AED) Standard
This course is catered to the layperson and combines adult CPR and use of an AED and Basic First Aid. Students will learn how to perform ADULT CPR, relieve foreign body airway obstruction (FBAO) in the responsive and unresponsive victim, provide rescue breathing with a barrier device, use an AED, and give Basic First Aid for injury and illness prevention.
Course Length: 8 hours

First Aid
This program teaches layperson first aid skills that meet the required OSHA didactic content, as well as presenting the first aid skills for injury and illness treatment and prevention.

This program teaches the layperson basic life support and addresses breathing and cardiac emergencies in caring for adults, children, and infants. Bloodborne Pathogens
This program teaches health care professionals and laypersons the knowledge needed to meet the required OSHA content for bloodborne pathogens prevention. Over five million workers in health care related fields are at risk to exposure to bloodborne pathogens, such as the HIV virus and hepatitis B virus. Designed to meet the current OSHA training requirements, Bloodborne Pathogens was created for students and employees who have potential for occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials, and even has supplemental information on airborne pathogens such as tuberculosis.
